The Town of Ilbewiese

One way to set up the 5 Town Map Tiles

Welcome to Ilbewiese, the town at the heart of the Monks of Ilbtal! Nestled in the river valley of the river Ilb, Ilbewiese (ILL-buh-VEEZ-uh) is a small late medieval village at the start of the game. On the outskirts of Ilbewiese are up to four small monasteries, which the players will control and expand. As the game progresses, the town will also grow, adding more and fancier shops. In this blog post, we will walk through the different areas of the town in the game The Monks of Ilbtal!

Please note these are all placeholder graphics while we playtest the game. The final product will have original artwork and beautiful landscapes for the terrain and buildings!

The Town Plaza and the Patron Board

The Town Plaza is an important place for the villagers, but for the Players’ busy monks, it’s mostly a place to find requests the villagers have posted for funding new shops in town.

New shops are important, as you will sell your fancy artisan products to these shops to generate income for your monastery in the form of “scrip.”

Each round, at least 2 of these cards will be shuffled out, and replaced with new cards, but the remaining projects will also receive a small trickle of funding from the locals, which can cut down the cost for you to fund a project.

The Chapel Plaza

As a small village, Ilbewiese gets by with a pretty small Chapel to Order. The folks of the Federation (the nation Ilbewiese is part of) are not religious, but they are pretty obsessed with order and efficiency as a culture. Villagers gather in this small building to hear sermons on how they can improve their own lives and the life of their community.

Anytime you send a Monk into town to run errands, they will first stop by the Chapel to deliver such a sermon, and garner a small donation to your monastery to boot!

As Ilbewiese grows, players may upgrade the Chapel to a larger, more prestigious building, which will also increase the donations you receive at the end of your sermon!

A bustling area of commerce, the Market District contains several important locations.

Each Round the Inn will have up to 4 Guests, depending on the Town Rank. During the Refresh Phase, players roll dice to determine the guests at the Inn, who can be recruited more easily than Villagers, and with a donation to boot!

The Peddler sells some important trade goods your monastery may need as it expands.

The Pub and the Grocer are the town’s starting shops. More of them can be added by funding projects on the Patron Board, and they can even be upgraded so that they will buy more expensive goods from you as your own production capabilities improve!

The Outskirts contain some important locations as well for expanding your monastery.

The remaining two tiles contain several shops that will sell goods to the monasteries (their icons have a yellow border rather than blue). You may need to source some of their supplies in order to keep your monks fed or working at peak efficiency!

The Builder allows monasteries to add new buildings to their own estates. It produces some Materials each Round, but more can be added in a pinch by using the Sawmill, which you may need to do anyway if you are looking to expand into neighbouring Woods.
